5.12. UNC Installation Paths

There are two ways to access a network share, using mapped drives and the alternate UNC paths.  A network share is located on a server that shares that directory with workstations over a network connection.

The UNC or Universal Naming Convention is a naming format for accessing network shares.  The format is:

\\server name\directory path on server to network share

Here is an example UNC path:

Windows has a function for network drives for easy access called mapped drives.  This allows a UNC path for a network file share to be assigned to a drive letter on a workstation for easier access.

Windows or File Explorer provides views of mapped drives and all network servers under the Network treeview panel.  You could located the UNC path of the target directory navigating the Network treeview category if you know the server and file share names.  Click inside the file share to display the UNC path in the Explorer address bar.  Click on the address bar and select Copy as Text.

Paste the copied path in the directory input field of the installation program.

The current installer software is an older version that will be replaced in 2017.  Occasionally mapped drives are not listing in the Browse function during a network installation.

For a new workstation client install with an existing network Retman4 directory:

  1. Open Windows or File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the existing network Retman4 directory using the UNC rather than the mapped directory path.  The address box in Explorer should begin with \\servername.
  3. Navigate so that the UNC path in the address box ends with Retman4.
  4. Right click in the Explorer address box and select Copy address as text option.
  5. Paste the copied UNC path into the address box in the Select Destination Directory DATA window.
  6. Click OK to proceed.

For a new network server and client install:

  1. Open Windows or File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the root server directory that will contain the network IRCH\RETMAN4 directory using the UNC rather than a mapped directory path.  The address box in Explorer should begin with \\servername.
    1. Please note that the install program will automatically add the directory path.  You do not have to manually create the IRCH\RETMAN4 server directory.
  3. Navigate so that the UNC path in the address box ends with Retman4.
  4. Right click in the Explorer address box and select Copy address as text option.
  5. Paste the copied UNC path into the address box in the Select Destination Directory DATA window.
  6. Click OK to proceed.

If you are not familiar with this process or company policies do not permit access, work with your company helpdesk or IT personnel to obtain the UNC path for the target network install location.  The target location is where the application directory will reside.
